What is Hymen?

The hymen is a thin and delicate membrane (a membrane is like skin but much thinner) which fully or partially covers the opening of the vagina in most of the girls. In adult females the hymen is simply a vestigial membrane of vagina which was present to prevent infection through vagina in the infant girls. In younger women, hymen is very vascular as opposed to menopausal women, which are very thin. In adult virginal women, the hymen is a different thickness that surrounds the vaginal opening more or less completed. The social function of the hymen, however, has been and still is a mythical symbol of virginity in many cultures. The hymen is named after, Hymenaeus, the Greek god of marriage.

Rupture of female Hymen

Rupture of female hymen normally occurs during the first sexual intercourse. Although there can be some instances wherein the hymen can be ruptured due to strenuous activities such bicycling, horse riding and gymnastics. It can also be ruptured by Inserting tampons etc.

There can be no to minimal bleeding and pain while the rupture of the hymen and a girl may not even being aware that a hymen tear has occurred. Some women are born without even a trace of a hymen.

What is Hymenoplasty?

Hymenoplasty have several names and the common ones are Hymen reconstruction surgery, or hymen surgery, or hymen restoration or, Hymenorrhaphy, revirgination is surgical repair of the torn hymen.

Types of Hymen repair procedure

Some white discharge from the vagina is normal after the surgery for 2-3 days and sanitary pads are advised till the discharge stops. Sexual Activity should be avoided until 4-5 weeks of the surgery to expedite the healing process. Lifting heavy object and household chores should be avoided for a week. Rest is the best way to heal the wounds, so the more you can take rest, the faster you will recover and be able to resume your daily activities.

Who is a candidate for Hymenoplasty?

Hymenoplasty is most often performed for religious or cultural reasons. In some of the conservative cultures women’s life can be in danger if it is found that she is not virgin, for these kind of women this surgery in more than a simple cosmetic procedure. However If you have venereal disease, you may not qualify as a candidate for Hymenoplasty.

Like all surgical procedure there are general risks of infection, bleeding are involved with the hymen reconstruction procedure, However if the procedure is successful and the aftercare has been taken care of properly than there is almost no risk. Risk arises when the procedure is completed with some complications or there are some gaps in aftercare.
